Modified silk was prepared via atomic transfer radical polymerization. The polydispersity of the grafted polymer was low .The silk macroinitiator was prepared first, and the relative content of Br was measured by EDS. The effect of catalyst to the content of Br on the macroinitiator was investigated. The dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) monomer was grafted on silk by ATRP. The effects of ligand, the dosage of the catalyst, reacting time and solvent on the grafting polymerization were studied. Furthermore, the difference of the silk fabrics obtained by ordinary chemical grafting method and APRP method was compared. The antibacterial effects of silk grafted by ATRP and then quaternized was studied. The properties of before and after treated silk such as whiteness, stiffness, moisture regains and K/S were measured. The structure analysis was achieved by FTIR, XRD and SEM.
