Along with living standard become better, the environments which the people request are higher and higher. The antibacterial materials are arrested people's attention. The production of antibacterial materials which can protect the environment has become a rising industry. The quaternary ammonium groups which are grafted to the pendant chain of polyvinyl alcohol could affect with cells, destroy cytoplasm membrane of bacterium, thereby kill the bacterium, make the modified materials antibacterial and the anti-dirt. This kind of modified materials are used widely in food industry, medical treatment product, and used specially in antibacterial coating, etc.Cationic modification for polyvinyl alcohol was successfully synthesized in 2 steps. The first one was the modification of hydroxyl functions of polyvinyl alcohol by epichlorohydrin, The second step was the reaction of the pendant chlorine atom with triethylamine and N, N- dimethylaniline. And using Escherichia Coli as disease-leading bacterium, examined influence of various factors on the antibacterial property of cationic modification for polyvinyl alcohol with the method of plate counting live bacterium.Polyvinyl alcohol of etherification modification was synthesized by reaction of polyvinyl alcohol with epichlorohydrin, using sodium hydroxide as catalyst and dimethylsulfoxide as solvent, and the structure of etherification modification product was characterized by IR . The influence of reaction temperature, reaction time, the mole ratio of polyvinyl alcohol and epichlorohydrin was investigated. The best prescription was found from orthogonal test and single factor methods.Cationic modification for polyvinyl alcohol was synthesized by reaction of polyvinyl alcohol with triethylamine or N, N- dimethylaniline. The structure of cationic modification product was characterized by IR. The influence of reaction temperature, reaction time, the mole ratio of polyvinyl alcohol and epichlorohydrin was investigated. The best prescription was found from orthogonal test and single factor methods.Antibacterial property of cationic modification for polyvinyl alcohol was investigated. The experimental results were as follows: antibacterial property of modification for polyvinyl alcohol by triethylamine and N, N- dimethylaniline was excellent. The higher cationic degree of cationic modification for polyvinyl alcohol was, the stronger antibacterial property was.
