Packed tower is the most useful equipment in gas-liquid mass transfer process in chemical industry. As the core part of the packed tower, packings play an important role in the tower operation.Compared with the traditional packings, XD-1 new-style taper spiral packing has special structure and completely different hydrodynamics characteristic, so taper spiral can make gas-phase reversedflow transformed into the crossflow in structured packing. XD-1 new-style taper spiral packing, which has some advantages such as great flux, low pressure drop, easy-making, high mass transfer efficiency, is so efficient that it has a bright prospect in industry.The experiment studied the taper spiral packing from its hydrodynamics and mass transfer characteristic. The air-water system was used to measure the hydrody- namics of the packing in a cold simulating experiment tower with a diameter of 80 mm. The kinetic factor was from 0.12 to 0.80, while the liquid flux was from 0 to 56.59 m3/(m2﹒h). A comparison was made among taper spiral packing,θ-ring packing and metal gauze corrugated packing. For the case of mass transfer, on the one hand, taper spiral packing ,θ- ring packing and metal gauze corrugated packing were tested using the air-sulfur dioxid - water system. In this part, the kinetic factor was from 0.12 to 0.30, while the liquid flux was from 11.32 to 33.92 m3/(m2﹒h), on the other hand, a series of total reflux separation experiment for ethanol- water solution had been carried out among taper spiral packing,θ-ring packing and raschig ring packing in two hot simulating towers with the diameters of 25 mm and 50 mm, and the number of theoretic plate N were studied.The experiment results showed that the taper spiral packing was better thanθ- ring packing, raschig ring packing and metal gauze corrugated packing both in hydrodynamics and mass transfer characteristic. The results showed the voidage ratio of taper spiral packing,θ- ring packing and metal gauze corrugated packing was 0.823:0.947:0.855,and under the same liquid sprayed density, the pressure drop ratio of unit height of packing layer was 0.58:1.10:0.62. The HTUs, which were studied in the cold simulating experiment tower, showed that the taper spiral packing had better performance thanθ- ring packing and metal gauze corrugated packing, and the HETPs, which were tested in the hot simulating experiment, indicated that the taper spiral packing had higher mass transfer efficiency thanθ- ring packing and raschig ring packing.In addition, the experience formula of gas pressure drop of the taper spiral packing was established under different kinetic factors and liquid sprayed densitys. Meanwhile, a mechanics model was developed to predict pressure drop in packed columns equipped with taper spiral packing, where the flow and physical property characteristic of the systems as well as geometric variables such as the taper were taken into account. The model was applied well to several sets of pressure drop experimental data. The result could be of value to the development and design of taper spiral packing.The superiority performance of the taper spiral packing were further studied, the experiment results experiment were application foundation for taper spiral packing in industry.
