Fluorene is one of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which is purified from coal tar. It is a white or almost white powdered crystal. Fluorene is an important stuff in organic synthesis and which is widely applied in plastic, dyestuff, pesticide industry etc. Because of the special structure of fluorene, there is a wide applied range in synthetic resin industry. In recent years, the derivative of fluorene has a wide application in chemical industry, functional polymeric materials, polymer synthesis chemistry and biological engineering, so the demand of it surges in domestic and international market. Therefore, the cooling crystallization of fluorene was studied systematically both in experiment and theory, including crystallization thermodynamics, crystallization kinetics and crystallization process.Using a laser monitoring observation technique, the solubility and supersolubility of fluorene in A,B, ethanol, isopropanol and n-butanol was experimentally measured by a synthetic method. Then the metastable zone for cooling crystallization can be obtained from the experiment. The solubility data were correlated with Apelblat equation and the data provide the theory basis for the crystallization process and has the instruction significance in industry.The nucleation and growth rate in crystallization kinetics have an important influence on crystal-size distribution(CSD) and is the basis for understanding of the crystallization behavior and crystallizer scale-up design. The kinetics of fluorene was studied by the moment transformation method. By using the least square method for the multivariate linear regression, the kinetic parameters under the considered experimental conditions were obtained and the parameters which can influence the process of crystallization are analyzed. So the experimental kinetic data is useful for process simulation and scale-up. Based on the data and experiments, the optimum process was obtained.By the study of solvents, agitation speed, crystallization temperature, solvent ratio, added seed etc, meanwhile, using the gas chromatography, cooling crystallization of fluorene is optimized experimentally on the basis of crystallization thermodynamics and crystallization kinetics study and the experiential optimum operating conditions for cooling crystallization process of fluorene in different content are finally obtained.
