Carbon-encapsulated metal nanoparticle (CEMNP) is a novel functional nano-composite and have received considerable attention because of their unique core/shell microstructure and physical & chemical properties as well as their potential application in many high-tech fields, such as biomedical engineering, catalysis, energy sources, etc.In this paper, we mainly introduce the formation mechanism of CEMNP synthesized by pulse laser. Through laser irradiating in the carbon-nickel suspension, we obtained the CEMNP. The carbon-nickel suspension was prepared by ball milling the microparticles of graphite and carbon. The as-obtained CEMNP have been characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results reveal that most the CEMNP with diameters in a narrow range, exhibited well-constructed metal core/graphitic shells structure. Also, there were very few particles with large diameters. The synthesis process of carbon-encapsulated nickel particles has been discussed, the mechanism involved in the growth process of carbon-encapsulated nickel nanoparticles was also discussed detailedly. When ablate in the suspension by laser, there will be evaporation of Nickel and graphite synchronously , on cooling ,through collision between particles, carbon and nickel nanoparticles begin to nucleate, condensation ,and finally carbon is ejected from the solidifying Ni/C droplet and forms a shell.
