Powder mixed EDM is a novel developing technology based on the traditional EDM, which plays an important role in the precise manufacturing of moulds and parts. And it has attracted great attention in field of electrical discharge machining for its excellent applications in improving the surface performance of the processed workpieces. It has become one of the hotspots in domestic and oversea research nowadays.Firstly, the paper systematically analyzes the research state and the trend of powder-mixed EDM and traditional EDM on the basis of a lot of literature and data. Based on the design of the box within dielectric fluid mixed powder, the software COSMOS/FloWorks is used to optimize the structure of the key part. The working box used for powder-EDM is then designed and the whole system has been debugged and used to machining. This paper is about craft experiment on SiCp/Al composites by the powder-EDM. The research of different craft conditions on this machining, especially discharge parameter, the influence law of the fine aluminium powder and the depth of machining is emphasized. By getting together some craft data and forming an integrated craft project, a SiCp/Al composites surface is successfully machined with Ra0.682.After analyzing the comparison experiment with traditional EDM, it proves that the roughness of the side surface machined by powder mixed EDM is only 45.1% of that machined by traditional EDM, while using the same parameters on the same SiCp/Al composites. The final result shows that the surface of SiCp/Al composites machined by powder mixed EDM has much better side surface performance.
