The friction between the tool and the chip attracts growing attention from the machining research community. It is important to consider the effect of tool edge geometry in finish machining where the cutting thickness is small and on the same order of magnitude as tool edge dimension. In this situation, investigating the friction between the tool and the chip, the cutting force, the chip formation and so on, have theoretical significance and practical value to a certain extent for revealing cutting mechanism and improving machining technology. In this paper, the calculation of the friction factors on the tool edge based on theory of slip line field is mainly studied in finish machining.First, the slip-line model for finish machining with the tool edge radius considered is developed. The slip line filed before the tool edge is mainly considered and modified based on formers'researches. The scopes of the friction factors on the tool edge are determined. The basic formulas of the cutting force and the chip thickness are deduced.Second, a basic calculation method of the friction factors on the tool edge based on theory of slip line field is put forward, and the criterion to determine the friction factors on the tool edge based on comparisons of the cutting forces and the chip thicknesses theoretically and experimentally is established.Third, this paper tries to discuss the calculation of the friction factors on the tool edge following the variation of the cutting thickness.
