ZnBi2B2O7 (ZBBO) crystal is a new nonlinear optical crystal. It has potential application value as nonlinear optical frequency conversion materials. This paper presents a systematic study on the crystal growth and characterization and includes the following:1. The MO-Bi2O3-B2O3 system (M = Zn, Ca, Sr, Ba) were studied systematically, ZnBi2B2O7 and CaBi2B2O7 powder had been synthesized by solid-state reactions. Single crystal of ZnBi2B2O7 was obtained by Spontaneous Crystallization, while that of CaBi2B2O7 has not yet been obtained.2. Stable crystal growth conditions of large ZBBO crystals were made clear. We had been discussed the conditions impacting the crystal growth, such as seed quality, saturation point, growth furnace temperature gradient, the melt viscosity, cooling rate and crystal rotation speed. The ZBBO crystal with a size 35×20×10mm3 was gained.3. The basic parameters of ZBBO crystal were studied. The orientation of the ZBBO crystal had been identified, (100), (001), (110) surface were easy to expose. It is found that when seed orientation was [110] direction, the crystal growth rate was obviously different for both sides, however it isn't found this phenomenon when the seed orientation was [001] direction. The melting point, molar enthalpy of fusion, and molar entropy of fusion of the crystal were respectively determined to be 964.02 K, 110680.36 J. mol-1, 113.92 J.K-1.mol-1 through DSC experiment. The transmission spectrum of ZBBO crystal was collected with wavelength range from 300 to 3500nm. The crystal shows high transmittance in the wavelength range 370-2500nm with a UV transmission cut-off of 350nm.
