The coking wastewater is very difficult to be treated because it contains concentrated organic matters with high chroma, moreover, concentrated ammonia is very difficult to be removed by traditional biotechnology in toxic environment. Therefore, coking plants cry for novel technology to decolorize and remove ammonia.Four efficient strains to decolorize were isolated from activated sludge, and belong to Neisseria, Bacillus respectively. Furthermore, the factors to affect declorization efficiencies, such as concentration of bacteria, temperature, pH, treated time and the addition of soil extracter, were investigated. Under optimum condition, removal efficiencies of the chrominance of coking wastewater were 73.65%,76.83%,81.02%,86.73% repectively by the four strains with 3 days. The Scenedesmus embedded in the fixed PVA-alginate was utilized to remove ammonia from coking wastewater. Moreover, the effect of environmental factors on ammonia removal efficiency was investigated.Under this optimum condition, the ammonia concentration, phenol concentration and chrominance were reduced to 24 mg/L, 0.48 mg/L,and the reduced from to 354 from 300mg/L ,3.01 mg/L and 402.67 respectively.Anyway, a novel technology named"co-immobilized algal-bacterial symbiosis system"to treat coking wastewater economically and simply was provided by this research. The result indicated that after undergoing this craft processing, the removal efficiencies of the chromaticity, the ammonia nitrogen, the phenol elimination rate respectively were 92.62%, 86.33% and 88.55% respectively .
