Activation carbon is one kind of common sorbents, it is widely used in the industry since its well-developed porous structure, stable chemical properties and considerable surface functional groups with high quality. Recently, the utilization of activation carbon as well as its specific beneficial properties has boomed the preparation method of activated carbon. Conventional activated carbon can't meet the demand of various applications in different fields, therefore, a variety of activated carbon were investigated nowadays. Activated carbon with high surface area was focused due to its high surface area, uniform of micro-porous structure and good capacity of adsorption. The properties of activated carbon, such as the pore distribution, surface area and were greatly influenced by different raw materials and pre-treatment process since the preparation of activated carbon is a complex process. In this dissertation, high surface activation carbon derived from corns was prepared with KOH activation. There were two steps, carbonization and activation in the production of activated carbon. The temperature and time of carbonization, the ratio of alkali to carbon, the temperature and time of activation were investigated in the studies. The particle size of raw corncob and the yield were also discussed too.The activated carbon was characterized by BET, XRD and TEM. The best condition to produce high surface activated carbon was a particle size of 20-40 mesh, a carbonization temperature of 450℃, a carbonization time of 30 min, KOH/C ratio of 4/1, an activation temperature of 850℃, an activation time of 60 min. The maximum surface area obtained under these conditions was 3227 m2/g. XRD patterns and TEM images revealed that activation carbon amorphous and order in shart range.
