Vermiculite is one of the kinds of clay minerals, which is adsorbent to metal cations and organic groups. Vermiculite is often used as a purifier to metal-polluted water. This dissertation reviewd earlier studies on the adsorption of vermiculite, and different ways of treatment to modify vermiculite. Natrium exchange was broght up as a modifying treatment. Meanwhile, Na-exchanged vermiculite was tested as a softener to hight-hardness water.Stones from Wengeqi of Neimenggu were the specimens. They were tested mineralogically to identify the compound of minerals. High temperature treatment were used to qualify the pieces of ore.The original vermiculite showed low adsorbent at about below 3% to Ca and Mg ions in relative experiments. Na-exchanging experiment was taken, the products were used in the very same experiment as the original ones. The results showed Na-exchanging is a successful method in vermiculite modification, the rate of adsorbent of this product reached above 80%. It was also experimented that temperature was very less affecting to the adsorbing process.Modified vermiculite was used as adsorbing reagent in common tap water as well, it worked well as in purified Ca Mg solution. Complex ions made little affection to the modified vermiculite. The original vermiculite exchanged its metal ions itself in order to ballace the proportion of different ions in high-salted water, which proved that vermiculite is able to produce Na-exchanging modified ones in natrium over scaled saltwater.
