Electrochromism can be defined as the phenomenon of the electrochromic materials that undergo color reversible change upon oxidation or reduction,which was ensued from changing the potential applied.The reversible change of the performances of the transmission,reflection and colors of the electrochromic materials can be shown in appearance.Electrochromic(EC) materials are one kind of functional materials,which have very bright application future.It can be used widely in large-area displays,light switches,unglaring viewfinders,deposited devices,building glasses,smart windows and so on.Recently,electrochromic display combined with nano-technique is most possible to be commercialized as multicolored electronic ink with the lowest cost.The earliest reported electrochromic material is inorganic and it has been studied for many years.The organic EC materials have been rising in recent years and the research of anthraquinone derivatives for EC materials was seldom reported.In this paper,some kinds of anthraquinone derivatives have been synthesized,phenylanthraquinones,benzylaminoanthraquinones, anilinoanthraquinones,and viologen modified anthraquinone derivatives.These compounds were characterized by 1H NMR,13C NMR,MS,and FT-IR,and they were proved to be consistent with the designed structures.The spectro- and electrochemical properties of these compounds were studied by ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry and cyclic voltammetry,respectively.The cyclic voltammograms show that these anthraquinone derivatives have two couples of obvious and reversible redox peaks.EC devices of anthraquinone derivatives synthesized were prepared based on conductive ITO glasses.The structure of EC devices is ITO glass \\ EC \\ ITO glass,and 'EC' is a gel mixture consisting of anthraquinone derivatives solution,tetra-n-butylammonium perchlorate,propylene carbonate and poly(methyl methacrylate) by a certain proportion.The behaviors of these EC devices were tested and EC devices with desirable behaviors were screened.The results show that phenylanthraquinones and 2-aminoanthraquinone derivatives are useful EC materials,but 1-aminoanthraquinone derivatives can't be used as EC materials for the minor color difference between their neutral and radical anion states.On the basis of these results,multicolored EC device was prepared and its EC behavior was tested.Multicolored display is accomplished initially and its property and effect need further optimization and improvement.In addition,the EC mechanism of anthraquinone derivatives was studied theoretically and the resonance structures and electron delocalization were illustrated in this paper in order to provide a theoretical basis and support for the further research.
