Furfuryl alcohol is an important and widely used feed for the chemical industry. This paper investigated the preparation of the CuO-ZnO-Al2O3 -MnO2 catalyst for vapour phase hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol, and also determined the optimum conditions of preparation and reaction.Na2CO3 was selected as a suitable precipitator and the other preparation conditions were determined as follow: aluminum added with Al(OH)3, parallel-flow- precipitation method, pH=8.0±0.2, Cu/Zn=1, Mn content 10wt%, Al content 5wt% and calcination conditions 350℃for 2h , heating rate 10℃/min.The reaction conditions were also investigated in the fixed- bed reactor. When the reduction temperature was 250℃, reaction temperature was 160℃, vaporizing temperature of furfural was 200℃, H2/ furfural was 8, the furfural conversion and the furfuryl alcohol selectivity were 88.34% and 99.11% respectively. It was found that the 2% Mg added can improve the stability and the activity of the catalyst. The furfural conversion and the furfuryl alcohol selectivity were 99.37% and 98.73% respectively when the reaction was carried out under the same conditions above besides changing liquid space velocity of furfural to 0.83 h-1 .
