Red tide is one of important problems of the ocean environment. How to monitor the red tide effectively is great significant to the work of mitigating the harm of the red tide. The work of detecting species of the red tide algae is one of the important works of monitoring the red tide. Based on the absorption spectrum and the technique of derivation, a method for detecting harmful algae and software system are developed.In this study, thirteen absorption spectra taken from single species cultures, representing four divisions, six Genus and seven species, were used to develop the detecting method. The fourth-derivative technique was used to extract the eigen spectra from the absorption spectra of phytoplankton for species detection was investigated. In order to examine the performance of the fourth-derivative technique in extracting species information, the clustering analysis was used to classify the eigen spectra. The clustering results were compared with the known species class information, and the results show the 13 absorption spectra are correctly classified at the level of Division, Genus and Species. This means that the fourth-derivative technique has good performance in extracting the eigen spectra for species detection. In the method development of detecting the harmful red algae, the eigen spectra database were built at the level of division, genus and species. Finally, five spectra of different species were uesd to test the developed method. Results show that the five species of algae are correctly recognized in the level of division.Besides, the system of detecting harmful algae based on absorption spectra of phytoplankton were developed. The technique, such as: Visual studio 2005(C#), sql-server database and Matlab , were used. The process of building the matlab components and the process in which the matlab components were called in the C# are the key processes. This system is the application of the method for detecting the harmful algae. It will be convenient to the researchers and protectors of the ocean environment.
