Eighteen complexes have been synthesized through the self-assemblies between the sulfobenzoate acid ligands and different metal ions in the presence of N-containing chelating ligands (phen, 2,2′-bipy and 4,4′-bipy). This paper consists of the following three sections:1. A series of new coordination polymers based on the mixed phen and sulfobenzoate ligands were obtained. Complex [Pb(asba)(phen)2]·2.5H2O(1) has a 1D chain structure, in which the asba ligand acts as tridentate ligand. [Pb(msba)(phen)2]·9H2O(2) is a mononuclear complex. The complex 2 was further assembled into 2D ordered structure through hydrogen bonds andπ-πstacking interactions between phen rings or aromatic rings. Complex [Mn2(msba)2(phen)4(H2O)2]·3H2O(3) is also a mononuclear complex, but lattice water molecules are less than those of complex 2. [Ni(phen)2(H2O)2]·msba·3H2O(4),[Co(phen)2(H2O)2]·msba·3H2O(5) and [Zn(phen)2(H2O)2]·msba·3H2O(6) are all mononuclear complexes, their structures are similar and msba anions don't coordinate with the metal ion. [Cd2Cl2(phen)4]·2Hmsba·4.5H2O(7) is a dinuclear complex, in which the chlorion anion bridges the cadmium ions. [Cu(msba)(phen)(H2O)]·H2O(8) shows 1D"zigzag"chain structure and further assembles into 3D supramolecular network via interchain hydrogen bonds andπ-πstacking interactions. In the compoud [Cu(asba)(phen)(H2O)]·2H2O(9), both the amino and carboxylic group of asba coordinate with the central copper atom. 2. Three compouds were obtained successfully based on the mixed sulfobenzoate and 2,2′-bipy ligands: [Cu(asba)(2,2′-bipy)2]·3H2O (10),[Pb2(asba)2(2,2′-bipy)2(H2O)2](11) and [Pb2(msba)2(2,2′-bipy)2(H2O)2](12). 10 consists of two independent mononuclear units, but 12 shows a dinuclear structure. Complex 11 consists of a 1D double"fioor"ziggag chain, the msba ligand connects the adjacent Pb(II) ions through its bidentate carboxylate group and monodentate sulfonate group.3. [Cd(4,4′-bipy)(H2O)4]·asba·H2O(13),[Zn3(4,4′-bipy)6(H2O)12]·3asba·11H2O(14),[Cu(4,4′-bipy)(H2O)3]·asba·H2O(15),[Cu(4,4′-bipy)2(H2O)2]·2Hasba·2H2O(16) and [Cu(4,4′-bipy)2(H2O)2]·2Hasba·2DMF·2H2O(17) were prepared by the reaction of 5-sulfoanthranilic acid (H2asba) with divalent metal ions in the presence of second 4,4′-bipy ligand, respectively. The coordination polymer [Cu2(msba)2(4,4′-bipy)2(H2O)2]·DMF·2H2O(18) possessing double 1D chains structure was synthesized from 4,4′-bipy , 3-methyl-5-sulfobenzoic acid and Cu(II). Complex 13 is 1D chain-like polymer, in which the 4,4′-bipy ligand exhibits bidentate coordination mode. It is of interest that 4,4′-bipy shows monodentate mode in 14. The same copper ion but different salts make complex 15 or 16 which exhibit 1D or 2D structures, respectively. The network of complex 17 is significantly influenced by the solvent compared to that of 16.
