This paper adopts the advanced experimental design method of 6 SIGMA, researched and finally fixed a optimal synthesis technic of a new surface sizing agent, and the self-regulating surface sizing agent was characterized by many methods, at the mean time, this paper primarily studied the application effect of this new surface sizing agent, and compared the application effect difference between the new surface sizing agent and several common-used surface sizing agents. Major findings of the study are as follows:1,Design of Experiments(DOE), which can screen out the most important factor in an experiment, was used in this study. Four-factors-two-levels experiments, with monomers ratio, monomer distribution droplets time, stir revolution and evocating agent dosage as the main factors, were designed and studied. The MINITAB software is used to help analyze the results, which showed that monomer ratio was the key factor.2,This paper measured the molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of the self-regulating surface sizing agent by gel chromatography, analyzed its structure by infrared spectrum, studied the surface form and the form of cross-section surface sizing agent film and connection situation of fibers and the film of sized paper by SEM from the microscopic view.3,In the application experiment, this paper has studied the technic conditions of surface sizing, such as the sizing weight, the composition of the surface sizing agent, and different calendaring pressure on paper properties in detail, the results assured that the best sizing weight was 2.0g/m2; the best composition that oxidized-starch to modified-PVA was 96:4,but the paper properties became worse with the increase of calendaring pressure. In the comparing application experiment of the self-regulating surface sizing agent and the oxidized-starch and PVA, the results showed that the self-regulating surface sizing agent was better than oxidized-starch and PVA obviously.4,This paper also investigated the application effect of the self-regulating surface sizing agent using as a dry strength agent. Compared the application effect difference among cationic starch, cationic polyacrylamide and the self-regulating surface sizing agent, the results showed that in terms of increasing paper strength properties, the self-regulating surface sizing agent was almost the same as cationic starch and cationic polyacrylamide.
