Mullite has been prepared using industrial aluminum hydroxide, industrial alumina, quartz powder and clay as raw materials. The influences of material species and synthesis temperature on mullite materials were investigated. The results showed that XRD analysis shows the proper sintering temperature is 1400℃. Lots of mullite were formated with industrial alumina and quartz powder with sintered at 1400℃for 3h intensively. XRD analysis shows compared with Al(OH)3 to Al2O3 as raw materials, the beginning of mullite generate slightly higher temperature, but generated a lot when the temperature slightly lower, and the formation rate slightly quicker.Lightweight mullite refractories were prepared by the foaming method .The sintered samples have lower bulk density using 1% SDBS as foaming agent. Adding dextrin can increase the strength of the sintered sample, the best content is 5% and the strength of samples were higher when mixing time is 8~10 minutes or temperature of foaming is 50℃. Stirring time and water temperature almost have no effect on properties of the samples.Lightweight mullite refractories were prepared by plastic method. It can decrease bulk density with spheric unicellular pearlite ,gangue ,pearlite. Foaming agents have some effect on bulk density and pore structure of the samples. Quartz have some effect on bulk density and liner shrinkage of the samples.The influences of foaming process , quartz powder and alumina silicate fiber content on lightweight mullite materials were investigated. It is used by dry and wet dicrete method. Adding some of alumina silicate fiber into the samples almost has no effect on bulk density and the apparent porosity of the samples, but the strength of the sintered samples can be improved obviously.
