Carbazole polymers having good photoelectric properties are widely used as organic photoelectronic functional materials. The research on carbazole polymers used in photoelectric materials has become hot spot, such as organic photorefractive material and photoelectric photographic materials, et al. Poly (N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) as the more important polymer of carbazole polymers, is widely used as organic photoelectronic functional materials and photorefractive materials due to its good hole transmitting capacity. However, the problem between PVK doped organic functional additive photoconductive material or organic functional additive is bad compatibility, so the PVK is needed to be modified to increase compatibility. The modification of PVK has attracted considerable attention at present and become one of the directions in the research of PVK photoconductive material.Firstly, the high yleld of PVK was synthesized via a series of reactions and the influencing factors of each reation were disscussed in this paper. The structures of the precursors of synthesis PVK were characterized as well as the structure and molecular weight of PVK were determined by infrared spectrum (FT-IR), ultraviolet spectrum (UV-vis), melting point test and gel permeation chromatography gel chromatography (GPC), et al.Then, the p-nitro azo bi-benzene amine was synthesized by azo coupling reaction between p-nitro benzene amine and benzene amine. PVK grafted by p-nitro azo bi-benzene amine (PVK-azo) with different grafting ratio were prepared via a post azo coupling reaction. The effect of the reaction condition on the p-nitro azo bi-benzene amine and grafting ratio of PVK-azo was disscussed. The best process condition was determined. The structural characterization, performance of p-nitro azo bi-benzene amine and PVK-azo were determined by FT-IR, UV-vis, differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TG), et al. The grafting ratio of PVK-azo was measured. The p-nitro azo bi-benzene amine was successfully synthesized in the experiment. Grafting ratio of PVK-azo from 7.3% to 20.2% was obtained.Finally, the photoelectric properties of PVK and PVK-azo were comparatively analyzed by density functional theory calculating method in Gaussian03 program and the test in the experiment. The research indicateded that the photoconductivity of PVK-azo was obviously higher than that of the PVK, and raised with the increase of the grafting ratio.Theory calculating result obtained consistency with the experimental result by analysis. The research provided scientific basis for the development of new photoconductivity polymer in the theory and the application aspects.
