Colloid is a homogeneous mixture. The particle diameter of dispersed material is between the coarse disperse system and the solution. It is prevalent in living and non-living systems. The raw materials in this paper adopt xylose mother liquor and citric acid mother liquor, which are a waste in industrial production,but they are contained large quantities of active ingredients and a larger viscosity. It is very difficult to recover xylose from crystalline mother liquor simply by concentration and crystallization. So it is important to study characteristics and separation of colloid.In this paper, xylose and citric acid mother liquor were used in the experiment. They were a waste in industrial production. So we carried out the following three studies:(1) For studying the nature of colloidal samples, many experoment were taken mainly by the determination of the total mother liquor colloid samples, potential, colloidal particle size and the colloidal solution in which the salts and proteins.(2) For studying the impact of colloid separation by physical methods, many experiments were taken. The time and intensity of microwave radiation and magnetic fields were studied. For them we can have the changing of surface charge and flocculation studies of the colloid in mother liquor.(3) For studying the impact of colloid separation by chemical methods, many experiments were taken. The colloidal surface charge and flocculation were studied by adjusting pH of mother liquor, adding flocculants and surfactants.The results show that:(1) Determining total colloid solution by alcohol measuring flocculation, the results is that total colloid of xylose mother liquor contents 0.0477g/ml, the total colloid of citric acid mother liquor contents 0.0476g/ml. There is the linear relationship between colloid concentration of xylose mother liquor and UV absorbance at 340nm: A = 0.0267 +29.725 C. There is the linear relationship between colloid concentration of citric acid mother liquor and UV absorbance at 320nm: A =- 0.010 +9.852 C. Colloids of xylose mother liquor are spherical and flocculation was the accumulation of state; Colloids of citric acid mother are the bar, connected to flocculation. There are both salts and protein in the mother liquor .High concentration of mother liquor; determining zeta potential is more stability.(2) When microwave radiation dealt with mother liquor , intensity of microwave is 700W, the mother liquor of xylose mother liquor was dealt with 150s and citric acid mother liquor dealt with 180s, zeta potential become the lowest and effective of flocculation is better.The role of the magnetic field potential impact of time on the mother liquor cyclical changes in the role cycle of 60min. Mother liquor of xylose effect of the first half cycle is higher than the second half of the cycle, citric acid mother liquor contrary.(3) Changing pH of solution can adjust the colloid surface of charge regulation. Adding flocculant or surfactants and compared with them, we known effective of flocculation in xylose mother liquor: inorganic polymer flocculant> cationic surfactants, amphoteric surfactants> non-ionic surfactant> anionic surfactant. To citric acid mother liquor, the effect of flocculation: anionic surfactant> cationic surfactant> polymer flocculants> amphoteric surfactant, non-ionic surfactant.
