As porous carbon, the adsorptive properties of activated carbon fiber and starch-carbon were determined by its pore structure and surface chemical groups. This paper mainly focuses on the following three aspects:The paper depicts the advance of research on modified active carbon at home and abroad from surface structure properties, chemical characterization and electrochemical characterization. The modification of surface structure properties is mainly done by enlarging specific surface area and control porosity, accordingly enlarging adsorption capacity. The surface chemical property is modified by redox to change the relative content of oxygen-contain acid group, base group and loaded metal compound according to adsorption capcity of which is dipoles, weak dipoles or non-dipoles molecule. The modification of electrochemical characterization is mainly done by exposing activated carbon under weak electric field to change the charge of the surface and chemical character.Activated carbon fiber (ACF) is a highly-effective adsorbent material superior to traditional granular activated carbon. It had particular chemical structure, physical structure and adsorption properties. The structure, properties, process, functionalization and applicative development of ACF are systematically introduced. The activated carbon fiber and starch-carbon were modified by nitrocellulose combustion and nitric acid oxidization. Its adsorption behavior to vitamin B1 and folic acid were investigated. The results showed that the -NH and -OH were introduced after nitrocellulose combustion and nitric acid oxidization, respectively. The adsorption capacity of folic acid increased after nitrocellulose combustion. But the adsorption capacity of vitamin B1 decreased after nitric acid oxidization.
