Iodine is regarded as one of important trace elements for biological species, which is closely related to the humans' growth development and metabolism. The role of iodine to the body is bidirectional, deficient or excessive intake of iodine will cause harm to human health. There are many high iodine areas in the lower reaches of the Yellow River Basin of Shandong. Groundwater and soil samples collected were analysed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) in the research, which provided a large number of accurate reliable data for the distribution of iodine, mode of occurrence, conditions and patterns of migration and transformation as well as the impact on human health. It is useful for changing water supply.Different chemical speciation of iodine varies greatly in biological effectiveness and toxicity, which determines the behavior and end-result in the environment. The effects to the environment and ecological systems can be accurately evaluated by determination of iodine speciation in a particular samples. In this study, iodide and iodate can be adsorbed in exchange column containing 717 strong-base anion exchange resin, then iodate is eluted absolutely by 3% sodium chloride solution while iodine without effect. After that iodide is effectively eluted by 2.0 mol/L sodium nitrate solution and determined with iodine-starch colorimetric method. From the measured results, it is achieved separation of iodide and iodate and simple to operate with high precision . It is a ideal means to separate iodide and iodate in sample disposal. It is shown that iodide is the major speciation in the groundwater and soil samples due to the impact of specific geochemical environment in the lower reaches of the Yellow River Basin of Shandong. In this research, it provides a great deal of data and it is of practical significance to the prevention and treatment of endemic disease. It is a scientific basis for the improvement of drinking water in the region.
