The Environmental Impacts And Strategy Of Urban Sprawl Of China

Urban sprawl is the disordered expansion of the city outside city boundaries in the course of fast growth at the expense of occupying agricultural land and green open space and land development patterns to the land resources with low-density, jump-style and uni-function. The fundamental motivation of its occurring is the inevitable result of the urbanization process under the rapid economic growth. Though the history of urban sprawl in China is short, just two decades after the reform and opening up, its development momentum is increasingly strong and the scale of development has been expanded. Urban sprawl had a profound impact in different areas such as urban economic development, social life and the ecological environment, particularly in the ecological environment of the cultivated land, groundwater, and wetlands resources. How to ensure the healthy development of urbanization, while giving full play to urban sprawl in the economic and social life of the superior forces to reduce the negative impact on the ecological environment, and furthermore, to realize urbanization and sustainability of economic development, is the main theme of this study.The article sorted and summarized understandings of concept of urban sprawl from different fields, and based on which, a new concept of urban sprawl has been defined; explored the formation process and the characteristics of urban sprawl in European and American developed countries and in Chinese cities. Through detailed analysis of relationship between China's urbanization and urban spread, dynamic reason of the formation of urban sprawl has been generally obtained, which includes the bias of understanding to the concept of urbanization, over performance of urbanization process and stimulation to the spread of the city by the development of traffic and automobile industry.It interpreted and analyzed the impact of urban sprawl on economic development, social life and the ecological environment. It affirmed the positive impact of urban sprawl on the economic development and the promoting effect on the quality of the social life of the community. The negative effects ecological environment caused by spread of urban were deeply analyzed and criticized. It pointed out that the obstacles of sustainable development of urbanization are enormous consumption and huge waste by urban sprawl on farmland resources, groundwater resources and wetlands resources, and energy resources.By changing the concept of urbanization development in China start to actively learn from overseas through the city on the control of the spread of a mature theory, advocates of urban development decision-making process should adhere to the scientific and public participation, improve urban planning and design and environmental management measures to achieve the right the impact of urban sprawl control, to achieve a sustainable healthy development of urbanization.Starting from changing the concept of urbanization development in China, through actively learn a mature theory from overseas on the control of the spread of city, it advocates that decision-making process during urban development should adhere to the scientific and public participation, improve urban planning and design and environmental management measures to achieve the right control to the impact of urban sprawl, thus achieving a sustainable healthy development of urbanization.
