In this study, a series of flame-retardant polyester and a series of PET / nano-silica compound, a series of flame-retardant polyester / nano-silica complex with 2 - carboxyethyl phosphonic acid phenyl (CEPPA) as flame retardants, nano-silica as additive, were synthesized by in-situ polymerization. The crystallization properties of composite materials, thermal performance, combustion characteristics, mechanical performance were studied by using Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimeter, limiting oxygen index instrument, Cone Calorimeter, Vertical Burning Instrument and INSTRON universal tensile machine to. The results as follows:The thermal stability of the flame retardant system during synthesis process were improved by previous synthesis of CEPPA and EG.The viscosity characteristics and mechanical properties are not affected by adding CEPPA. While by increasing of phosphorus, the limiting oxygen index (LOI), Tcc of the composites increase, Tg and Tm of the composites drop.Tm of the composites does not affected by adding silica. While by increasing of phosphorus, Tcc of the composites drop, Tg of the composites increase, LOI keep unchanged or drop slightly.Brittle fracture cross-section of composites characterization by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) show that the nano-silica with low content distributes more evenly in the composite, while nano-silica with high content tend to reunion. The polyester with phosphorus only show loose and discontinuous property by observe the carbonization of the sample, which is negative for good thermal and oxygen blockage. With the adding of silica, thermal and oxygen blockage properties are improved a lot.
