As the most affluent resource in the world, biomass resource has not been fully used by human beings now. There are a lot of excellences such as: biodegradability and reproducibility which show its infinitely potential. For the exhaustion of the petroleum and coal, human must face serious energy crises and environmental pollution. As an alternative resource, biomass will be attracted much attention than before. As a biomass resource, wheat straw was burned down or thrown out every year which has caused a lot of environmental pollution. Through a series of simple treatments, Wheat straw could be used as an effective adsorbent to remove the industrial waste water. The treatments included two steps: pretreatment of straw to remove most lignin and the quaternization of the residual straw. Acetic acid pulping was used to remove lignin and the quaternization was carried out in an aqueous suspension to introduce the cationic groups. The dye removal results revealed that the maximum adsorption capacity of the cationic straw for dye AB92 could arrive 1072 g/kg. The effect of temperature, reaction time and mass ratio of EPTMAC to residual straw of the quaternization on the adsorption capacity was studied to achieve the optimal reaction conditions. The effect of adsorption time, dye original concentration and pH of dye solution was studied. The adsorption equilibrium data of the cationic straws fitted well with the Langmuir adsorption model and the kinetics data fitted well with the second-order adsorption model. The cationic wheat straw could adsorb different dyes (acid red 18, acid blue 92 and orangeâ…¡). The cationic straw after adsorption could be regenerated by treating it in 2M NaOH aqueous solution, and the regenerated cationic straw could be reused.Filter paper is an industrial production. The chief component of filter paper is cellulose. Through the quaternization process of filter paper, the cationic filter paper was made which could be used as an effective adsorbent as well as the cationic wheat straw. The effect of adsorption time, dye original concentration and temperature of dye solution on adsorption capacity was studied. The adsorption equilibrium data of the cationic filter paper fitted well with the Langmuir adsorption model and the kinetics data fitted well with the second-order adsorption model. The adsorbent could adsorb different dyes (acid red 18, acid blue 92 and orangeâ…¡).
