Micro mechanical structures are becoming more and more popular in some fields, such as the micro electronic industry, aeronautical and astronautical industry, medical equipment industry and the automation industry. Compared with the traditional mechanics, micro mechanics has become one of the important subjects in the 21 century. As one of the micro-EDM technologies, the micro electrical discharge machining method is gaining the researcher's more and more attention recently. It shows a great potential development compared with other micro 3D machining technologies.Base on many articles and papers about the development of the micro-EDM machining technology and its relevant equipment, this paper constructs a self-developed micro-EDM equipment that can move simultaneously with 4 axes. The equipment is made up of many units, such as exact XYZ 3D moving stagies, high-speed servo spindle, computer system, RC pulse generator, WEDG, discharge signal detecting unit. All that have been done above provide a solid base for further research.According to characteristics of micro-EDM machining technologies and the analysis for equipment moving abilities, this paper made the servo control strategy for 3D mill machining technologies and developed the whole machining control software. Some unique functions of the micro-EDM have been realized, such as machining codes interpretation, calculation for any line and arc interpolation on two-dimensional surface, the control for machining path and backward movement when signal detecting is short circuit, electrode wear compensation and so on.For the fact that electrode wear can affect the machining precision in the 3D mill machining, this paper proposes a new method that combine the uniform wear method and linear compensation method. In addition, its theoretical model is also developed in this paper.Several 3D micro cavities that have been machined and comparative experiments for the new electrode wear compensation method have proved the micro 3D-EDM equipment can meet the requirements of micro-EDM, machining control software is easy for use, and the new electrode wear compensation method can improve the surface quality and machining efficiency evidently.
