Function materials, which can absorb ultraviolet rays, Mid-infrared and Far-infrared, also can reflect Near-infrared, are becoming a hot point for lots of researchers. Function materials lessen ultraviolet rays aging materials and hurting our bodies by absorbing them, and protect our environment, reduce temperature and save resources by means of reflecting Near-infrared, even it may camouflage in military equipment by absorbing Mid-infrared and Far-infrared. Therefore, function materials have important application values and very huge market.SiO2, TiO2, Y2O3 and Al2O3, and function materials SiO2 doped metallic ions (Zn2+,Y3+,Al3+ and Ti4), TiO2-SiO2, Y2O3-SiO2and TiO2-Y2O3, even including function materials SiO2-TiO2-Y2O3 and SiO2-TiO2-Al2O3 were prepared by stearic acid gel method using Al(NO3)3·9H2O, Y(NO3)3·6H2O, stearic acid, (C2H5)6SiO4 and C16H36O4Ti. Their structures, optical properties and thermal stability were thoroughly characterized by FT-IR spectrum, X-ray diffraction (XRD), SEM, thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) and UV-Vis-NIR spectrum. We discussed systematically the changes of their optical function, and some useful explaination and interesting results were gained. Meanwhile, we thoroughly researched the effect of concentrations (Y2O3 and Al2O3), calcinations temperature and annealing time for optical properties of function materials.The results of experiment indicated that when the concentration of Y2O3 was 40%, calcinations temperature at 800°C, annealing time 3 h, the optical properties of function materials (SiO2-TiO2-Y2O3) is the best. The reflectivity of Near-infrared was 85 %, the transmittance of Mid-infrared was 40 %, and the transmittance of Far-infrared was 30%. Meanwhile, when the concentration of Al2O3 in function materials was 20%, the reflectivity of Near-infrared was 85 %, the transmittance of Mid-infrared of function materials (SiO2-TiO2-Al2O3) was 10%, and the transmittance of Far-infrared was almost zero. Surpriseingly, the transmittance of Mid-infrared and the transmittance of Far-infrared of function materials had the same change curve with the change of experiment conditions, for example: calcinations temerture, annealing time and so on. Function materials were applied in construture, equipment coating and so forth as a kind of coating, and were dispersed in organic solvents to prepare transparent thin film to absorb ultraviolet rays, Mid-infrared and Far-infrared, and reflect Near-infrared.In this paper, we had a thoroughly research in optical properties of function materials prepared by stearic acid gel method, which had a lot of advantages, for instance, the conditions of experiment was easily controlled, operation is simple, the time of reacton short, the raw material of reacton rich. What is more important, its optical properties met the demands of practical applicaton.
