In this paper, glass forming ability and properties of ZrNiAl tenary alloys were studied. Multi-function vacuum melting furnace was used to refine ZrNiAl alloy ingots. XRD, DTA, DSC were used to study the glass forming ability for different compositions, and the best composition for formation of glassy state was eventually identified. Amorphous ingots were then successfully prepared with the diameter of 2, 3, and 5 mm both for Zr60Ni21Al19 and Zr61Ni21Al18 ternary bulk amorphous alloys respectively. The compression properties and potentiodynamic polarization curves in NaOH, HCl and NaCl solutions of the as-quenched and annealed Zr60Ni21Al19 bulk amorphous alloy were obtained. In the compression process, there is only elastic deformation, no plastic deformation for Zr60Ni21Al19 amorphous alloy. The amorphous alloy exhibits a high compression fracture strength, low elastic modulus and high elastic strain values. The fracture angle of Zr60Ni21Al19 amorphous alloy is about 40°. Different parts of the fracture surface show different features and belong to different fracture mechanisms. As can be seen from the side of sample, a few shear bands show bend or step-like movement. Generally the result is aroused by the flow stress and stress concentration.Zr60Ni21Al19 ternary amorphous alloy has excellent resistance to electrochemical corrosion. In NaCl, NaOH, HCl solutions, the ternary alloy exhibits higher corrosion-resistance than its corresponding crystalline alloy and stainless steel 0Cr18Ni9Ti. The full-immersion results of the tested materials in HCl solution consistent with the results of polarization curves. There is no obvious difference in the oxidation resistance between Zr60Ni21Al19 amorphous and its corresponding crystalline alloys. Both exhibit high oxidation resistance.
