With the development of manufacturing industries, for example, aviation, automobile, shipping and mould industries, the application of free-form surface profile has become increasingly important in modern industries. It is necessary and urgent for the manufacturing industry to develop the CNC technology for free-form surface. One of the key issues nowadays is to develop the CNC technology for large workpiece with free-form surface.To satisfy the requirements for the specific workpiece, a new machining method is proposed in this paper. This method is set up on the basis of the following-up machining system of the CNC technology, then the whole Following-up machining system has been designed and developed after choosing the hardware and developing the software. Finally, the test workpiece scaled down with respect to the actual one is machined. It is presented that the Following-up machining system is feasible.The following aspects are focused on this research:1. The machining methods are proposed to satisfy the requirements of the project and the characteristics of the workpiece.2. After investigating the machining methods, the whole following-up machining system is designed. It is researched that 840D CNC system is suitable to work as the main controller for the machining system. Additionally, according the special requirements of the workpiece and the machining methods, requirements for the hardware and software are analyzed and satisfied.3. The type of the hardware is selected with respect to the requirements of the machining system, then the hardware configuration and the connection for the hardware are designed.4. According to the designing requirements for the machining system, it is necessary to implement the secondary development of man-machine interface for 840D CNC system, therefore, a reasonable and orderly process are executed. NC program is designed via the technology of dual-channel, which is used for controlling the machining process. In addition, the programs of S7-300 and FM352-5 are designed to assist the process. In the program designing, multiple processors are coordinated to conduct the task, and the timeliness of the system is improved as well as the processing speed.
