Converter sludge and dust is one of the auxiliary products of steelmaking with the converter. There are 7,000,000~9,500,000 tons be produced in China every year. These years, most of the converter sludge and dust are put into the raw materials sintered as materials because of the high Fe content. And others are reused to the steelmaking flow by direct iron process or steelmaking process. In these ways, the use ratio is high, but many problems are existed. For examples, it reduces the venting quality of mixed burden more and more nonferrous metals harm for life of the experiments and etc. Consequently, it is very important to explore a way of utilizing converter sludge and dust, in which the use ratio and economic effectiveness are both improved. Besides much less garbage is produced. The converter sludge and dust used in the investigation is taken from a Steel and Iron Works in Hubei province. They are analyzed basic physical properties in lab environment. Explored different ways to separate the converter sludge and dust's useful compositions and recycle them by different methods for improving the worth of recovery and utilization of the convert sludge and dust.Through the research of the surface observation and the basic physical property of converter sludge and dust sample, it has many characteristics. Such as fine granularity, tight combination, big ratio surface area. The results of experiments are that the content of TFe is 45.60%, the content of MFe is 23.02%, the content of FeO is 57.10%, the stack density is 0.828 g/mL and the pure proportion is 3.62 g/cm3. The distribution of granularity of sample can be illustrated as follows,+0.074 mm accounts for 38.90%,-0.074 mm+0.044 mm accounts for 10.59%,-0.044 mm accounts for 50.51%.Firstly the dusts are separated by concentration technology (mostly magnetic separation) in this experiment. All of the separate results of Laboratory magnetic tube, WHIMS and high intensity magnetic separation are got. The experiment effect of whip and demagnetization to magnetic separation is balanced. The Fe final content of the concentrate reaches to 78.33%. Then the concentrate is used to making the iron oxide reds. The targets of the iron oxide reds are tested carefully. The degree of purity gets to 92.94%. It reaches the H102 requirement about the purity stair product in the standard of GB1863-80. The oil absorption value can reach to 19.13 g/100 g and also reaches the standard of GB 1893-89.The suitable conditions of removal of Cu2+ in water using the tailings of magnetic separation of converter sludge and dust are:At a temperature of 25℃(normal temperature) conditions, the adsorption material usage is 8 g/L, concentration of Cu2+ is 20 mg/L, and the reaction time is 50 min, removal rate of Cu2+ is 97.86%. The importation of conditions in the order:The usage of the converter sludge and dust> the concentration of Cu2+> reaction time. The tailings of magnetic separation of converter sludge and dust react consistent with Langmuir isotherm, K=0.0095. The mechanism of the adsorption is mainly about surface adsorption and complies with somewhat of replacement reaction as well. It may exsits flocculation adsorption.
