Photoresponsive hydrogel was a promising material, which had drawn wide attention in the light-controlled switches, display devices and light-controlled drug delivery in recent years. Photopolymerization technology is more suitable to prepare bio hydrogels due to its moderate reaction condition, fast rate, space modulate and localized response. Based on the above characteristics, this paper designed and synthesized two kinds of water-soluble azo monomer, respectively. A water soluble azo monomer with short photoresponse time was synthesized and two kinds of photoresponse hydrogels were prepared via photopolymerization technology with UV or visible light. Upon additional irradiation, they exhibited different photo response character, which may be due to the different isomer states of azo group under different light irradiation and the interior morphology of hydrogel. The obtained two hydrogel showed different swelling property and controlled release behavior. The isomerization rate of azo monomer, swelling properties and release properties of photoresponsive hydrogels were studied. 1.4-[4-(acryloyl) phenyl azo]-benzenesulfonic acid (APABS) has high reactivity.2.4-[4-(acryloyl) phenyl azo]-benzenesulfonic acid (APABS) has fast response speed, with UV irradiation(30mW/cm2), interconversion between trans and higher energy cis isomeric states will be able to achieve balance within 20s, which showed a highly reproducible.3. Tthe absorption peak of APABS was unchanged in water and DMSO, through intermittent exposure to the UV and visible light over 70 times. The result indicated a good fatigue resistance and repeatability.4. Two different types of hydrogels containing azo group were designed and prepared via UV and VIS light initiating photopolymerization technology. The obtained two hydrogels showed different swelling property and control release behavior by using Ribavirin as model drugs.
