In 1935, the great designer Raymond Loewy designed the named refrigerator Cold sport for Sears, which established the basic form of modern refrigerator and has changed the traditional refrigerator's structure for its concise and lively design through Functionalism, which is the core of Modernism. With the development of technology and society consumers'demands are changing. The consumers not only need the basic functions of household refrigerated fresh-keeping products, but put forward higher requirements to the products'form, that pay more attention to the spiritual and cultural symbols function. The same and monotonic design is the tolerable for the people, so they require the products can highlight their personalization, "Less is bore" advocated by Postmodernism which based on human being and pursue the spirit functions of the design directly opposed the doctrine "Less is more" which is advocated by Modernism and Internationalism Style. The current household refrigerated fresh-keeping products designing trend is in such a transformation, while there are confusion and contradiction in disposing the relationship between nationalization, traditional and internationalization, fashion correctly. This thesis aims to find out the modern design theory and methods of household refrigerated fresh-keeping products through the study of the design and analysis, to guide the current design practice by positive exploration, to change the poor and lonely design, to constantly meet the developing physical function and mental function which are required by human being.This thesis started from the overview of domestic household refrigerated fresh-keeping products. Firstly, the author introduced the emergence and development of household refrigerated fresh-keeping products in ancient China, which have a long history in China. Bing Jian may be the ancestor of household refrigerated fresh-keeping products. Bing Jian as the cold storage of food utensil has been appeared as early as the Warring States period. There are other cold storage products or methods in ancient China such as Ling Yin, icehouse, well hidden method, ice boats. Secondly,, household refrigerated fresh-keeping products have been changing with the technology development and show the diversity and the wealthy of people's needs in market from the Industrial Revolution to nowadays. I tried to explore the products'development trend and inspire the design practice by sorting out the history of household refrigerated fresh-keeping products. It's a better way to guide household refrigerated fresh-keeping products' design practices by integrated theoretical analysis, design factors analysis and approaches of design. The thesis focuses on the meaning of modality and the foundation of the modality values. In order to improve the users' aesthetic enjoyment in the interactive process between people and product and make the product hold the "form" and " semantics",the modality design constrain the two aspects'design of "form" and "semantics". The modality values as a kind of aesthetic criticisms has a significant effect in guiding design, therefore, how to establish the modality values plays a key role in design practices. I think that the current modality values should have the three necessary conditions:the first is innovation. The core of design is a creative work, a problem-solving methods and processes. There is no place for products without innovation, which also lose the soul of design. Innovative methods can be achieved from property analysis, demand analysis, correlation analysis and collective creation and so on. Secondly, the design should have reasonable function, reasonable structure, reasonable value and reasonable aesthetics. A good design should not only hold the basic functions, but also meet people's desire for spiritual function. As the close links between design and market, it should give full play to the role of value engineering to design cost-effective products. Thirdly, design should be people-oriented and have reasonable ethics. Design should serve the public, not only the minority; Design should pay attention to the ecological balance, protect the natural environment and combine the short-term benefits and long-term interests, not immediate benefits and ignoring long-term interests.Then I have an in-depth analysis to the three elemental factors of design on household refrigerated fresh-keeping products. Various point, line, surface and body shape can cause different changes to the modality; Color changes can cause different psychological reaction and visual aesthetics; material is the material carrier of the design, and the different texture showed a variety of aesthetics.The author believes that symbol design is the way to approach modality aesthetics. The process in which designers condense their ideas and values to be expressed into products'form factors through symbols is called "encoding". Users can understand the designers'ideas and values also by symbols through the adverse process which is called "decoding" With symbols, communication can happen between users and products, designers. Symbols can show the use of basic function and mental function of products. In addition, a common symbol reserves is needed for the semantic convey of symbols. Aesthetic principles are the ways to arrange the form factors, and we can get the excellent products in aesthetic with the perfect arrangement. It is the aesthetic principles such as change and unity, contrast and harmony, balance and stability, transparent and clean that are frequently used in household refrigerated fresh-keeping products.In addition, household refrigerated fresh-keeping products'design keeps on tight contract with the market, and change following with the market's transformation. At present, the "Satisfaction Principle" is becoming an important indicator in evaluating a design. Market segmentation is not only a way to meet the individual needs of consumers, but also as an branches of enterprise's "Focus" strategy. In this thesis, the author finds out the ways to meet various groups and deferent environments'needs in household refrigerated fresh-keeping products through market segmentation according to the groups and environments.Finally, I have a study on National design and Green design (Ecological design) on household refrigerated fresh-keeping products. Monotonic and boring products appeared affected by Internationalism style, and the only way to solve the problem is refer to National design. The author think National design should combine the ancient national design ideology and design element which can embody the glorious national charm with the modern design methods. Today, the environment has been deteriorating, therefore, Green design as the sense of social responsibility of designers has been placed a high premium on. The author summarized some guiding comments to Green design through the analysis to the all aspects of life cycle of household refrigerated fresh-keeping products.So far, the theories on household refrigerated fresh-keeping products design mostly focused on technology, while the theories from aesthetic perspective are fragmented and without system. In view of this reality, I have a systematic study on the design of household refrigerated fresh-keeping products from the perspective of aesthetics, and get a systematic theory on it which plays an active role in guiding the design practices by combining design theory and methods and integrating arts with technology.
