In recent years, research of antibacterial materials is becoming an important frontier issue at home and abroad. Currently antibacterial property and spectrum of material are not satisfactory, so they are limited by common applications (especially biological materials). Therefore, it is of great significance to synthesize broader spectrum of selectivity and higher antibacterial material. In this study, we synthesized hydrophobic/ hydrophilic segments of antimicrobial polymers via the traditional radical polymerization and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. Zone of Inhibition Testing and Minimum Inhibitory Concentration method, Turbidity method are used to show that both the random copolymer and block copolymer have excellent antibacterial activity and hemolytic experiment shows that they are not toxic to rabbit blood cells. In view of few reports about antimicrobial application of block copolymer, we discussed possible factors affecting antibacterial activity of the block copolymer. This study we synthesized random and block copolymer through traditional polymerization and RAFT controlled /"living" polymerization, it has demonstrated that it is feasible to synthesize highly antibacterial amphiphilic copolymers. We hope readers will obtain useful information of preparation of higher antimicrobial and broader spectrum of materials.
