In this paper, three substances such as montmorillonite, organic montmorillonite and lignin are introduced in the process to modify urea-formaldehyde resin and the performance of the modified urea-formaldehyde is tested. The experiment was studied on the performance such as formaldehyde level, viscosity, curing time and solid content of urea-formaldehyde resin by adding different amounts of montmorillonite, organic-montmorillonite and lignin respectively. The experiment showed that the performance of urea-formaldehyde resin was not improved by the montmorillonite, Lignin directly. However, when the montmorillonite were disposed into organic montmorillonite by means of intercalation, the performance of urea-formaldehyde resin were improved obviously. So the formaldehyde level of urea-formaldehyde resin was improved by many kinds of quaternary ammonium salt and its mechanism was analyzed by XRD, FTIR and SEM in the experiment. Comparatived with many kinds of quaternary ammonium salt to modify the urea-formaldehyde resin by means of intercalation, the intercalation of montmorillonite modified by cetytrimethyl ammonium bromide, which is 2.25nm, is larger than the others. it shows that formaldehyde level of the urea-formaldehyde resin is reduced with the increasement on molecular weight of quaternary ammonium salt.
