2,2'-Dichlorohydrazobenzene was electrolytic synthesized using a self-designed cell equipped with ion-exchange membrane. The influencing factors such as ion-exchange membrane, dispersion conditions, electrode materials, reaction temperature and current density were discussed on the electrolytic reduction. The reaction conditions were optimized. The yield of DHB was 96% when the electrolytic reaction occurred with the incorporation of methylbenzene and emulsifiers, at the current density of 5A/dm2 and 80℃. The contents of products were determined by high pressure liquid chromatography. The whole reaction course was described by the cathode potentials. The controlling step of the electrolysis reaction were proposed on the basis of the data of cyclic voltammetry and potential curves plus the electrocatalytic hydrogenation mechanism, indicating that 2,2'-dichloroazobenzene was converted to 2, 2'-dichlorohydrazobenzene. The main source of byproducts in the pre-reaction and post-reaction was also studied. Based on the obtained results, the pilot test was employed to evaluate the possibility of industrialization.
