Along with rapid increasing output of plastics and the Safety Standard For Fire Preventing tending towards gradually strickness, the demand of flame retardant is likely to going up. As people are paying more attention to the environment and most halogen-containing flame retardants are forbidden to use in some application according to WEEE and RoHS, development of novel halogen-free flame retardant becomes a focus nowadays. Among these, phosphorus and organic silicone are attracting a lot of attention. In this paper, phosphorus and organic silicon were successfully combined in one molecular, the structure of flame retardant was studied, and then it was applied into PC, its effect on flame retardancy, thermal property and thermal degradation behavior were also studied. The novel flame retardant containing phosphorus and silicon (PSBPBP) had been synthesized from pentaerythritol, phosphorus oxychloride, resorcinol and DB-902, the chemical structures of FR were characterized by FTIR and NMR.PSBPBP was incorporated into PC. Through the results of LOI and UL-94 test, the FR enhanced the flame retardancy of PC successfully. TGA result revealed the addition of FR improved the high thermal stability of PC. SEM and Raman results showed that the FR helped PC to form a more stable char layer which resulted in a better flame retardancy.Talc and PSBPBP were incorporated into PC. The flame retardancy of PC was improved by the results of LOI and UL-94 test. And thermal stability and the structure of char formed after combustion were also investigated. It was found that FR improved the thermal stability of PC, and the outer surface of char layer was smooth, the inner side was swollen, which acted as an insulating barrier to heat and combustible gas.
