Casting is a sort of few cutting or no cutting and multi-process coincide production method. Casting process used to replace traditional machining processes, can improve production efficiency, and ensure part quality, conservation materials. The life of mold is directly related to the production efficiency and cost, is the core issue of concern to mold manufacturing.This paper discussed the main failure mode of the metallic mold based on the research of the domestic and abroad actual of metallic mold for Piston-mold for Casting Aluminum Alloy. And from the actual needs, analyzed the factors affecting the life of metallic mold based on the materials of the metallic mold, manufacturing (including forging of the rough and manufacturing of the metallic mold), heat treatment (including conventional heat treatment and surface treatment), the process of casting (including preheating, coating, and casting spilt pattern, etc.), cooling, use, and many other aspects, proposed guidance on production improvements.Analyzed the case of 021 piston casting mold failure. Constructed the mechanical model of 021 pistons casting mold and deducted the deformation. The interface of the metallic mold core is thermodynamic analyzed by Ansys, and the 021 pistons casting mold is improved by the result, greatly reduce the early failure of the metallic mold, increase their service life.
