A high-temperature coal tar provided by Wuhan Iron & Steel (Group) Corp. was repeatedly and sequentially extracted with petroleum ether, methanol, acetone and isometric acetone/carbon disulfide mixed solvent under magnetical agitation to afford extracts 1-n to 4-n (∑E1-n to∑E4-n). All the extracts were analyzed with a gas chromatography/mass spectrometer to examine the effect of extraction times on the extract compositions and to compare the difference in composition among the extracts obtained with different solvents. The results show that each E1-n mainly consists of toluene, naphthalene and anthracene and increasing extraction times significantly decreased the relative content of naphthalene; main components in E2-n are naphthalene and anthracene and the relative content of naphthalene gradually increased, whereas that of anthracene gradually decreased with increasing extraction times; naphthalene and anthracene are also main components in E3-n, but the relative content of naphthalene initially decreased and then increased, while that of anthracene gradually decreased with increasing extraction times; many highly condensed aromatics with 5 and more rings were detected in E4-n; total yield of∑E1-n to∑E4-n reaches 66.7%, which is much higher than that of all the distillate from conventional coal tar distillation process.
