Using beef extract as carbon source and inoculated with active sludge, the experiment was performed to discuss the influences on decomposing of sulfate minerals by sulfate reduction bacteria (SRB) by the methods of adding different iron oxides under anoxic condition. The paper revealed the decomposition mechanism and the environmental effects. We analyzed the pH,iron ion, sulfate concentration of the system and products by using the analysis of SEM and EDS. The results showed that the iron oxides had obviously synergistic effect on dissolution of sulfate mineral. The synergistic action mechanism is that, (1) The Fe2+ which was restored by iron-reducing bacteria could react with H2S which released from sulfate reduction formed iron sulfide. It could eliminate the restrain action of sulfate decomposition by SRB of H2S. (2) The pH and alkalinity of the system was enhanced with the increasingly dissolving of the biochemical production CO2 due to the deoxidizing dissolution of iron oxide. The calcium ion which induced dissolution turned to calcite then settled as sediment and also accelerated the decomposition process of sulfate mineral by SRB. The formation of new mineral calcite could show that carbon sequestration reaction occurred during the decomposition process and reduced the emission of the warming gas. This research can resolve the problem of the rational use of industrial by-products and lighten the pollution of the waters and gas. The positive effects of controlling Greenhouse and environmental by the carbon sequestration reaction.
