Ionic liquids perform various unique features and those containing long chain could be used as ionic surfactants. The function of system can be dramatically enhanced when mixed ionic liquid surfactants with conventional surfactants. Moreover, the hydrophobic or electrostatic interactions between the ionic liquid surfactants and traditional surfactants endow the mixed system with more unique characters, which make the system has potential to be used in production of food, medicine, cosmetic, and oilfield exploitation as well.In this paper the imidazole ion liquids Cn[mim]Br have been synthesised, the phase behavior, rheological property, interfacial behavior of the mixture system of Cn[mim]Br /SDS/H2O were investigated. The chemical/physical characters of the mixture system such as apparent phenomenon, phase behavior and extraction effect of ATPS (aqueous two-phase system) were studied systematically. During the studty it was found that in the case of the carbon number of the substitute alkyl group chain equals to or above 6, the stable ATPS containning a clear interface can be formed, which shows obvious extraction property to dye, thus it can be usedfor extraction and separation of active biomass. Furthermore, the mixed solutions containg ionic liquids with different alkyl chains show different characters; the difference of size and shape of mixed surfactant aggregates in the solution leads to the difference in appearance. The electrostatic effect between ionic liquid and SDS, the hydrophobic interaction of alkyl chains and the synergetic effect between the two surfactants promote the further ordered arrangment of the surfactants aggregats. The effect of the microstructure of the surfactant aggregates on the characteristics of the mixed system C8[mim]Br/SDS/H2O was explored, which can provide theoretical instruction for pratical application.
