With the shortage of energy and resources, people pay more attention to renewable and clean energy. Wastewater is rich in energy in biodegradable organic form. Microbial Fuel Cell(MFC) is a novel technology for wastewater treatment, which can not only aim at water reuse but also recover energy from organic. Research found that the use of different strains can be inoculated in the cathode microbial fuel cell to achieve nitrification and denitrification process。In this way, it can producing electricity with carbon and nitrogen removal. In this paper,A coupled MFCs system composed of an oxic-biocathode MFC (O-MFC) and an anoxic-biocathode MFC (A-MFC), was set up for simultaneously removing carbon and nitrogen and energy recovery from synthetic wastewater. In the case of continuous operation, the effects of several operational parameters including external resistance, recirculation rate and influent flow ratio on electricity generation and substrates removal were also discussed. The MFCs coupled system was also used to dispose wastewater with different COD/N ratios, and complete nitrification and denitrification was successfully obtained in the MFCs coupled system through adjusting the influent ratios of O-MFC and A-MFC. According to the principle of conservation of electron number gains and losses, we build a empirical model and verify it by experiment. Leachate treatment was also investigated in biocathode MFCs at the basis of research on synthetic NH4+-N wastewater. The performances of power generation and leachate desposal were studied in two-bottle biocathode MFC. Furthermore, oxic/anoxic-biocathode MFC coupled system was used to investigate leachate treatment and electricity generation in the continuous feeding mode. The following conclusions were drawn:(1) MFC implements the combination of nitrogen and carbon removal while producing electricity and it can run best when R1=20?, R2=5?,Q1:Q2=1:1,R=2.(2) the minimum COD / N can be used by MFC combine process is 15.4, this time it achieve complete nitrification and denitrification. (3)Microbial fuel cell have ability to produce electricity by degradation landfill leachate. Our research work will promote the development of biocathode MFC on nitrogen removal.
