This article focuses on the research of the cheongsam during the period of Republic of China, committed myself to the law of development about popular styles, structure and the cut, the decorative features and accessories. And the relationships between these changes and the special social environment with blended Chinese and Western cultures, through this research, trying to reappear a complete history of Cheongsam of the Republic of China.Since the birth of the cheongsam, it is the focus of popular and history researcher who dedicate clothing culture and fashion. It is easy to find the controversial reports and articles about cheongsam for all aspects from the Republic of China's newspapers and magazines. Even now, there are still a large number monographs or papers to research cheongsam from many points of view. In this article, based on the study of a large number of cheongsams which handed down from the time of the Republic of China, the author synthesis the ancient and modern research methods summed up three main ways:clothing handed down, the historical image research, literature studies. Each channel can be as a single way to research cheongsam, but integrating the three channels, it can be more rich and conclusive to the evidences of cheongsam study. Analysis of kinds of objective data and images, analysis of detailed structure and cut technical coupled with many abstract described texts, making our research to the characteristics on one special period and the entire development process more detailed and clear, more consistent and accurate. So we can be more accurately to hold the evolution track of cheongsam in that time. The author make detailed specifications and structure data analysis to more than 500 pieces of physical cheongsams in Museum, and create a database by means of mathematical and statistical software which is named SPSS, and make a preliminary classification as an objective reference for image and literature research. The issue of a large number of publications and the popularization of photography, making the image data has been very rich during the period of the Republic of China. Especially a large number of old photos and published pictures with women wearing the cheongsam in different periods of that time, what are the most visualized information to reflect the characteristics of the cheongsam. Coupled with the popular women's magazines and newspaper supplements for women's fashion reporting in real-time, literature research of the Republic of China has a qualitative describe for the development of cheongsam.In this paper, physical garments, images and text as three aspects of cross-references. Based on the analysis of the characteristics of the cheongsam in various periods since its birth time to the year 1949, the author looks for the evolution time node. Through the analysis of characteristics before and after the node, we find the factors which impact these changes, including the integration of Chinese and Western culture, the social environment changes, as well as cutting technologies revolution, and so on.
