Fabric puncture caused by sharp objects is a common form of fabric damages. During puncture deformation, fabrics were under the multi-directional stress. There are slippages and tension deformation among warp and weft yarns. As the increase of the yarn stress, the fabrics will be in puncture failure. Here we investigate the fabric puncture behaviors both in experimental and FEM approaches. The load-displacement curves and puncture failure mechanism were unveiled from the approaches. The main contents are:(1) Tensile properties of warp and weft yarns of plain,2/1 twill and 2/2 twill woven fabrics were tested. (2) The puncture experiments on plain, 2/1 twill and 2/2 twill polyester fabrics were conducted through MTS 810 material tester. The load-displacement curves could be obtained as well as the ultimate damage modes of fabrics. (3) The puncture behaviors of three kinds of fabrics mentioned above were simulated with commercial-available FEM software package ABAQUS to get the load-displacement curves and ultimate damage modes of fabrics. (4) Compared the results of load-displacement curves and ultimate damage modes of fabrics between experimental observation and FEM calculation. Puncture mechanism and damage modes were analyzed and factors influencing on puncture strength were discussed.Puncture process of fabrics could display directly through FEM approach. It will be helpful to analyze the stress of yarns and fabrics during puncture deformation, and reveal puncture mechanism of fabrics to design fabrics with high puncture strength.
