Research and development of a safe and cost-effective ship ballast water treatment for the biological species intrusion prevention technology is a difficult problem. Pulsed high-voltage discharge is a new advanced oxidation water treatment technology. Plasma technology has recently become significant because it offers the advantages of lower costs, higher treatment and energy efficiencies, and because of the smaller space volume it occupies. The present work investigates the use of a needle plate reactor and a plate-hole-plate reactor with liquid hybrid discharge system to inactivate the algae in ballast water, analysis the amount of hydrogen peroxide and ozone. Each experiment was carried out by introducing three different gases:air, oxygen and argon. The results obtained in this study have led to the following conclusions:(1) Algae were treated by changing pulse peak voltage and pulse treatment time, the results found the inactivation rates of algae were increased with the increase in pulse peak voltage, treatment time and pulse frequency.(2) In the plate-hole-plate and needle plate discharge experiment, injecting three different gases, we can get the discharge parametersthe that inactivation rates of the algae had reached to 100% when changing discharge voltage and discharge time.(3) In the experiment, the different inactivation rates of algae were obtained with the different gas injections and the best inactivation rate was found to be in the order of oxygen>air>argon.(4) Hydrogen peroxide and ozone concentrations were increased when the pulse peak voltage, treatment time were increased. The concentrations of hydrogen peroxide and ozone were higher in the order of oxygen>air>argon.(5) Comparison of the experiments of treatment algae and input energy by liquid discharge using plate-hole-plate reactor or needle plate reactor, the affect of plate-hole-plate reactor on the inactivation rates of the algae and the input energy is better and more than needle plate reactor.
