In this paper, the modification of polyethylene by calcium carbonate was investigated. Firstly, the effection of the particle size of calcium carbonate to the performance of the modified polyethylene was discussed. In this experiment, we studied the impact of the modified polyethylene by the calcium carbonate particle size between 5μm and 0.2μm. By changing the particle size of calcium carbonate, the best reinforced performance of the calcium carbonate was obtained. In the preparation of the modified polyethylene, calcium carbonate particles could be distributed in the polyethylene matrix uniformly.Secondly, the method of modified polyethylene by calcium carbonate was investigated. Found that the performance of the sample which was obtained by calcium carbonate and polyethylene matrix by simple mixing was poor. Steps were taken by the system, first, the masterbatch of modified polyethylene was prepared, and then the modified polyethylene was required following the appropriate proportion, the performance can be more substantial increased.Meanwhile, we also investigated a variety of other inorganic particles (titanium dioxide, steel waste, MMT )modified the polyethylene matrix. The results shown that calcium carbonate was better than these inorganic particles on the cost-effective.In order to improve the performance of modified polyethylene for further, a variety of additives were added and we found that calcium carbonate which was treatmented by coupling agents and surfactants on the performance with polyethylene matrix was much higher than the pure calcium carbonate .Among them, the tensile properties were up to the 13.12MPa, impact strength did not decrease with the improvement of the tensile strength and it was 2.9KJ/m~2.For the current development trend of modified polyethylene, a variety of testing methods were used and we found that when the mass fraction of calcium carbonate in the modified polyethylene was 20% , its properties can be best. Thus, in the case of improving the performance , calcium carbonate can greatly reduce production costs. Adding excessive, because of agglomeration of calcium carbonate, the performance would reduce.
