Synthesis Of Gemini Surfactants And Their Applications In ATRP Emulsifier-free Polymerization

Gemini surfactants which are developed recent years have better emulsified effect and good market application prospect because of their special structure. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) has been an important method of preparing the high performance material in recent years. Following the environmental requirement, much research has been done about ATRP emulsion polymerization. Considering the influence of small molecule emulsifier, reactive emulsifiers can be used to solve the problem. Two gemini quaternary ammonium salts which can also be used as ATRP initiators have been synthesized and been characterized. Then both of them are used in AGETATRP emulsifier-free polymerization. The research results are listed as follows:1. Two gemini quaternary ammonium salts have been synthesized and then their CMC and solubility are tested. It is shown that they have good water-solubility and emulsification effect.2. Gemini quaternary ammonium saltâ…¡has been used in AGET ATRP emulsifier-free polymerization. The reaction temperature, the ratio of catalyst and ligand are changed in PMMA emulsion polymerization. It is shown that the first-order kinetics plot for the disappearance of the monomer is linear. The plot of conversion versus number average molecular weight is linear. The polydispersity indexes are narrow and the liveing/control effect is good.3. Gemini quaternary ammonium saltâ…£with UV initiate feature is used in AGET ATRP emulsifier-free polymerization and synthesize PMMA-PAMA copolymer. After UV curing the allyl and the UV initiate group of the polymer, the film of good water and solvent resistence are obtained. The method of synthesizing polymer is environmental friendly, the polymer properties are good, so ti is useful in practical application.
