Time-resolved luminescence bioassays based on lanthanide-luminescence probes have become common, useful tools in clinical diagnostics and bioanalytical chemistry. In this work, we have designed, synthesized and characterized two kinds of Eu(III) luminescence complexes, and discussed the luminescence properties and applications of the complexes in Time-resolved luminescence bioassays. In this work, a novel europium complex-based luminescent sensing probe, [4'-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2,2':6',2"-terpyridine-6,6"-diyl]bis(methylenenitrilo) tetrakis(acetic lacid)-Eu3+ (HTTA-Eu3+), has been designed and synthesized for the time-resolved luminescence detection of pH. Using time-resolved luminescence mode, the luminescence properties and the relationship between pH and the luminescence intensity of HTTA-Eu3+ was investigated. It was found that this sensing probe with quantum yield of 0.018 has long luminescence lifetime, high sensitivity and good water solubility. The probe's luminescence was significantly sensitive to the pH changes in the range of pH 5.0 to 7.5 with a good linear time-resolved luminescence response to pH in the range of pH 5.6 to 7.0. The results obtained by this work indicate that the new Eu(III) complex HTTA-Eu3+ is a useful luminescence sensing probe for the time-resolved luminescence detection of pH in complicated samples.Another new europium complex, {4"-[4'-(2,4-nitrophenylsulfonyloxy)phenyl]-2,2':6',2"-terpyridine-6,6"-diyl}bis(methylenenitrilo) tetrakis(acetic acid)-Eu3+ (NSTTA-Eu3+), was designed and synthesized. The NSTTA structure and its intermediates were characterized by using the mass spectrum, nuclear magnetic resonance and elemental analysis method.Tests of the luminescence properties of NSTTA-Eu3+ demonstrate that this complex and its products is weakly fluorescent which means that NSTTA-Eu3+ is not an efficient time-resolved luminescence probe.
