Self-repair technology on worn metal is a very effective surface engineering technology which can reduce the mechanical consumption and prolong the service life of equipment through repairing the micro-damage on metal surface in-situ and dynamically. Many studies have confirmed that serpentine mineral powder on the metal worn surface has a good self-repair effect, However, current research on self-repair are more focused on in steel / steel pairs, according to geological explanation on the causes of minerals, serpentine and chromite have the pattern of symbiotic combination; therefore, carrying out study on the self repair effect of chromium-based surface is very significant. This paper analyze how the serpentine powders as self-repair additives in high temperature conditions impact the 45 steel / chromium-based Friction and Wear Properties. Through the experiment, this study systematically research how the concentration of serpentine , as well as different temperatures effect the metal wear self-healing effects. The results show that: serpentine under high temperature conditions can produce a self-healing protective layer in the surface of iron and chromium substrate, playing a role in reducing friction and wear-resistant and high-temperature environment is more conducive to form self-healing protective layer in a short time. There is a optimal value existing on the concentration of additives in serpentine generating the protective layer of self-repair, and the optimal value should be based on different environmental conditions.Self-repair mechanism is an extremely complex process, which includes mechanical friction, the friction of physical chemistry and the role of micro-metallurgy. This article uses the isomorphic theory in geology to make an explanation on the formation of self-repairing layer, and put forwards the reaction mechanisms of metal wear self-repair, presents the reaction process of self-healing.
