Currently, with the development of flexible processing, such as NC machining, the automation processing of free-form surfaces have been basically realized. Because of many limitation of processing technology, finishing processes still mainly rely on manual operation, such as grinding, polishing. This process is time consuming, inefficient and difficult to obtain high quality surface. Therefore, it is significant to research and develop new automation equipment and methods for free-form surface, instead of traditional manual operation.Through studying forming process and mechanism of compliant precision polishing in 4-axis on free-form surfaces, the tool system is developed in this article. This is a new set, with CNC milling machine as the carrier. In the premise of not to interfere CNC milling machine work normally, the position and force can be independently controlled after their hybrid space being decoupled into two independent subspaces by tool system. Meanwhile, the design of wrist joint mechanism makes tool system could adapt to the curvature changes of free-form surface. It implements force/position hybrid control synchronization in the process of polishing. The working principle of tool system is introduced in article, and virtual prototype system is established in ADAMS. The simulation of shape-adaptive of tool system is taken in three different free-form surfaces model (sine surface, ellipsoid surface, and free-form surface). According to the shape of the surface, the tool path is resolved, and process trajectory is planned in article. The NC code of process is generated in Mastercam. The experimental system platform of tool system is also built and programming data acquisition and pressure control are achieved by LabVIEW. Through polishing experiments in different parts (plane and convex), it can be known that there is good shape-adaptive for tool system to free-form surfaces, and polishing pressure is stable in the process.
