With the improvement of living conditions, the health conception is changing and transferring from treatment to prevent and health care centered, the intelligent garments for monitoring physiological parameters have attracted more attention. Pulse signal is an important health indicator which can reflect the human cardiovascular system in physiological or pathological features of the human body. At the same time, the fiber grating has good stability, resistance to electromagnetic interference and other characteristics. Combining with the need of the health care of human, this study developed a smart garment which can detect the human pulse by the fiber optic sensing technology.The smart garment consists of two sections:pulse sensing and optical transmission. The pulse sensing section take the Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensing device as the core device which was installed on the clothing cuff and used to detect the radial arterial pulse wave. The optical transmission section which is used to transmit signals is located on the sleeve and clothing pieces.The device consists of two layer fabrics, filler and FBG sensors, the study analyzes the working principle of the sensor device theoretically. Through the experiment, the two layer fabrics structure, whose outer layer is woven fabric and inner layer is low elastic knitted fabric, has been chosen, and height of the concave filler is 2cm. According to the demand, this study has encapsulated and fixed FBG sensors and filler by the air layer knitted composite structure, and the pulse sensing section of the smart garment has been finished. At last the reliability of this part has been verified.If the fiber optics is knitted with the weft insertion structure, the transmission loss is large, can’t meeting the requirement. The study make the optical transmission part by using the thermal bonding, the cylindrical helix bending mode has been used whose bend radius of the optic path is 25mm, then finished the optical transmission section of the smart garment by paperback sleeves.The pulse sensing and optical transmission was incorporated into the garment, the whole smart garment system has been completed and the estimating reliability and stability evaluation of the smart garment has been evaluated. Through the analyzing, we can conclude that the smart garment can satisfy the expected target basically and achieve the human pulse detection. The detection system is attachable, which can satisfy taking and washing requirements and provide some reference basis for the development of intelligent monitoring garment.
