At present, steel factories count steel bars one by one by workers. It is laborious, low effective, and encumbering to enhance the system throughput. Furthermore, if workers work long time, they will feel much tired. This will induce them to make mistake. According to this status quo, a kind of steel bar automation counting system is studied by Diagnostic Engineering Center on Equipment of Northeastern University and Fu Shun Steel Co. Ltd. This thesis is one part of the item.This paper tries to develop a counting system for steel bars based on image processing. We select line scan CCD camera to shoot images of steel bars.A Distribute Control System is composed of industrial computer as the host computer and a single chip microcomputer of AT89C2051 as lower place machine. Main responsibility of industrial computer is processing steel bar images, conserving results and sending control signals and data signals. AT89C2051 as process control unit is used to control transmission mechanism driven line scan CCD camera to shoot images of steel bars and control display of LED screen. The way data transmission between industrial computer and AT89C2051 adopts serial communication.This paper elaborates working principles and achievement of ways for all parts of the system.A transmission mechanism is designed according to the way of shooting images. Transmission method adopts gear and rack transmission.We design all of circuits for the entire system. This part includes interface circuit between industrial computer and AT89C2051, control circuit of transmission mechanism, interface circuit between single chip microcomputer and LED, and driving circuit of LED.Image acquisition and managing software running on the host machine is developed using Visual C++6.0 and control procedures running in lower place machine are programmed using MCS-51 assembly language. The software running on the host machine can realize these functions of achieving pre-set for camera, processing bars'images, saving and quering results, communicating between the host computer and lower place machine. We program control procedures running in lower place machine to receive control signals and data signals sanded by the host computer, thus to control transmission mechanism and display of LED.We can arrive at a conclusion from experiment and site conditions that the system we designed can complete image collection, disposal and display of LED. The system can work very well.
